Selvedge denim, explained.
Raw, one wash or stonewashed: what the words on a pair of Japanese jeans mean, and how to look after them.
What selvedge means
Selvedge, or self-edge, is the finished edge of denim woven on a traditional shuttle loom. You see it as a clean line along the inside of the outseam, often with a coloured thread.
Raw, one wash or stonewash
Raw denim has not been washed and can shrink at the first wash. One wash means the denim has been washed once before sale. Stonewashed and vintage washes, like orSlow’s Black Stone or Fullcount’s More Than Real, are faded on purpose.
Looking after your jeans
Wash inside out, at a low temperature and not too often, so the indigo fades evenly. Hang to dry and check the care label before the first wash.
